A march back to the beginning

He was born in the local hospital here. His mother worked on the campus. Their little house was near the football stadium and they sold spots on their lawn for parking. From here he heard the Marching band, he became a bit obsessed with the marching band, and at age three could sing the entire fight song and loved to show off his high step marching moves. Every day he would ask, beg, plead for his mom to take him to the field to hear and watch them practice.

The summer after he turned four, they moved away from this pristine college town, to be closer to family. My sister was raising him alone, and she wanted to be closer to our parents and other family. That same boy came home today with his cap and gown for graduation in June. Last week he made his commitment to that very same college he learned the fight song for at age three.

Evan will become a Michigan Wolverine this Fall. He has already got the sweatshirt, sticker for his car, and the blanket in his back seat. Not one to make these decisions lightly, once made, there is no stopping him. It was a close run with Boston College, but when he visited Ann Arbor with his dad there was no more vacillating, he knew he had come home.

It is of course a proud moment for all of us who know him. It is bitter-sweet as it takes him further away, once more. His mother raised him with a freedom to march to the beat of any drum he chose. His unique beat will now be heard in the town where he was born. Evan will have the chance once more to high step his way to a future as bright and loud as the song he has known since he was three. The Michigan fight song.

“The Victors”

Now for a cheer they are here, triumphant!
Here they come with banners flying,
In stalwart step they’re nighing,
With shouts of vict’ry crying,
We hurrah, hurrah, we greet you now, Hail!

Far we their praises sing
For the glory and fame they’ve brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Far we their praises tell
For the glory and fame they’ve brought us
Loud let the bells them ring
For here they come with banners flying
Here they come, Hurrah!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan
The leaders and best!
Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!

We cheer them again
We cheer and cheer again
For Michigan, we cheer for Michigan
We cheer with might and main
We cheer, cheer, cheer
With might and main we cheer!

Hail! to the victors valiant
Hail! to the conqu’ring heroes
Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
The champions of the West!
