Whimsical Wednesday: Ixtapa, Mexico part 3; Ixtapa Island

My parents discovered this little gem of an excursion the first year they went to Ixtapa. When they took our family for the first time I fell in love and knew this would need to be a must visit each year we were here. We take the city bus from down town to Playa Linda walk the quarter mile out to the pier, buy our tickets and get on a water taxi for the 10 minute ride over to this wonderful Island.

Here we are met by workers of the various restaurants wanting you to come to their place for the day. We choose one on the far side of the island where the snorkeling is best and the owners offer wonderful margarita’s, will cook the fish we bring and of course rent the snorkeling gear as well. It is a wonderful day adventure, the scenery incredible and water perfect for venturing out in.

The following comments are from tourists sites and give you a broader view of my personal insights!

Since its development in 1970, this island has become a man-made paradise and wildlife reserve.

Ixtapa Island is one of the most popular attractions for tourists vacationing in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. The island features beautiful beaches, crystalline waters for snorkeling, quiet coves for sunbathing and local restaurants for dining on fresh-caught seafood and other tasty treats. Water taxis to Ixtapa Island depart daily from Playa Quieta beach in Ixtapa and from Zihuatanejo Municipal Pier.

Ixtapa Island Snorkeling.Snorkeling is the activity of choice on Ixtapa Island. Coral reefs teeming with beautiful varieties of fish and marine life come alive at the least expected moments. Ixtapa Island features a few distinct areas for snorkeling, offering visitors different opportunities for enjoying the fun water sport. Snorkeling on Ixtapa Island is suitable for swimmers of all ages.

Ixtapa Island Activities. In addition to snorkeling and sunbathing, Ixtapa Island offers the opportunity to practice a number of water sports and activities such as wind surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, jet ski and banana boat riding. Take a short hike to Carey Beach, regarded as the most secluded beach on Ixtapa Island, for exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean and Ixtapa’s legendary beaches on the mainland. Enjoy a leisurely pace, allowing plenty of time for photographs and admiring the scenery. Afterward, lounge on the beach at one of the many open-air restaurants serving fresh fish, homemade guacamole, ice-cold beverages and more.
